What is Event Welfare?

Simply put, event welfare provides help and support to festival or event attendees who find themselves in distress and need a safe secure place to turn to. TTK Welfare provide a safe haven no matter what problem someone is having from “I lost my phone” to “I’m having trouble coping”. The list of help we offer is a long one and each year we discover more we can do to help.

I’ve never worked with welfare before . How will I know what to do?

As well as being given a TTK Handbook that provides information and guidance on
welfare work, you will be given on-the-job training. You will be assigned a mentor who will help
guide you through your duties. We need to make sure you understand the procedures and methods
we use to administer welfare support

Will I be paid for my time working?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You will be offered a fee for your service once you have been trained. On-the-job
training takes place on your first two events that you work with TTK . During training you will be
offered a fee that covers your travel expenses. Once trained, you will be offered a fee equivalent to
the hours you are working and your level of experience

What will my duties include?

The list of things we do to support people is as long as your arm.  Mainly, you’ll be asked to be friendly and welcoming. You will talk to people, many of whom are quite distressed about one thing or another. You will listen and offer what support is appropriate. If you’re not sure what to do there will be a team of experienced welfare people with you to advise. We also ask that everyone muck-in to keep the welfare unit tidy so you may have to fold blankets, wash tea cups, disinfect surfaces, clear up any rubbish and so on.

Do you help people who have “over done it” at events?

Yes. In some situations we help those who have  found themselves overcome by an alcohol or drug experience and need a safe place to feel protected and non-judged while they recover. We are usually set up next to the Medical First Aid tents and we make sure a medic looks over people coming for support before we take them in for recovery.

Question 6

What do you mean by “safeguarding”?

An event organiser is responsible for the safety of all children and youth on site, especially if the parent is not available to provide the safety and protection of that young person. TTK Welfare can help with any issues on site that involve children and youth under 18 years old, including looking after “lost kids” at some events.

What does the Welfare tent look like?

The Welfare Unit is usually housed in a marquee/tent that is divided into smaller “rooms”, so that there is a reception area, another separate curtained off area where some people may need to “sleep off” the effect of drugs or alcohol and a staff area where we keep our kettle, food  and supplies.  In recent times we have added a small separate tent that we use as a Safe Space.

What is the Safe Space?

This is a small tent adjacent to the Welfare Unit that is separate and isolated from public areas. It is where we can take people who have been traumatised by an abuse and who need privacy. Sometimes we use the Safe Space for people or children who are neuro-diverse and become over stimulated by the event crowds.

What hours will I have to work and how many?

The welfare unit at an event is open all hours the public are on site. You will be assigned a shift per day, with that shift lasting about 8 hours. There will be times for a break, a meal and during some shifts you may be asked to do a “Welfare Walk” i.e have a wander through the event,  be visible and keep an eye on public welfare.

Question 10

Which festivals or events will I be working with?

Once your application has been processed, you will be sent regular updated information about the events and festivals on our agenda. You can put your name down for events that interest you or we may contact you and ask if you are free to help at  certain events.

Question 11

Will I get any perks at the event?

Accepted Answer

By being a part of the event as a crew/staff member, you will be allocated crew catering vouchers. You will also have access to staff parking, staff camping, staff toilets & showers. There is usually a toilet behind the welfare unit for our use and for those in our care.

Question 12

What if I want to see some of the bands/performers?

Accepted Answer

When you are at an event with TTK Welfare, you are there on a job, not as a festival attendee. Your first priority is always to provide welfare support during your shift. However, we do understand there will be some performances that you are very keen to see. We will do our best to schedule your shift or your break so that you can see some of the acts on site.
